Ministry & Missions Opportunities

Gravel Hill UMC members take full advantage of the opportunities to touch the lives of people in all nations. We delight in bringing the word of God to everyone and assisting them in furthering or beginning their very own walk with Jesus Christ.

Please check the sign-up sheets at the Welcome Center, the Sunday Bulletin, or The Beacon to become involved in one of the many Ministry opportunities here at Gravel Hill.

Just remember, if you are taking part in a church-sponsored activity, there's a likely chance that you are involved in one of our many ministries to some degree. If you'd like to know more, just ask!

Gravel Hill UMC is actively and intimately involved in providing for local community organizations and members who are in need.

God's Garments

God's Garments is a ministry providing free clothing to anyone in the local community. Our mission is to provide a basic need to local families struggling to cover the costs of living in hopes that they can use their limited resources to cover other expenses. We do not ask that people "qualify" for this help, and we do not limit who can come and how often.  God's Garments, like Christ's love, shows no limitations or prerequisites.  It is free and open to anyone.  We are open to the public 6 times per year  and are available to help those in crisis situations as needed. The clothing we give has been donated through church members and other members of the community. We often have a surplus of items which are then donated to other charities such as Love in a Box, Jubilee, etc. We serve close to 75 people each time we open our doors.  If you would like more information on how you can get involved with this ministry or you have general questions regarding it, please contact the church office at 838.4721 ext. 100.

Isaiah 6:8 & Adult Christian Education Classes

In addition to God's Garments, various groups throughout Gravel Hill are also actively involved in local missions with fund raising and providing services and goods and through companionship activities.  Several groups include The Koininia Sunday School Class, Ken Staver Sunday School Class, Faith in Action Sunday School Class, the Missions Team, and Isaiah 6:8.  Please contact Tony or Shauna if you are interested in learning more about the classes, groups, or opportunities.  Examples of several ministries we support include Love in a Box, Caitlin's Smiles, The American House, GAINusa.org, Hope Lodge, Compassion International, Joy El Ministries, The Ronald McDonald House, Nothing But Nets, The Caring Cupboard, Operation Christmas Tree, and Lebanon County Christian Ministries. This ministry is also collecting items to donate to a growing number of homeless congregated under the South Bridge in Harrisburg.  Check out the Bulletin for updated lists of needed donations.

Volunteers in Missions & Missions/Partners in Missions Team

In the spring of 2014, several members of our Church and Missions Team were called to help with Hurricane Sandy clean-up.  One team went to Staten Island, New York in partnership with reachglobalClick here to see pictures from this trip.

Another team visited Crisfield, Maryland.  Below is a video montage highlighting the trip.

"It's hard to believe that it has almost been two since Super Storm Sandy made landfall and yet its effects can still be felt in Crisfield Maryland. Crisfield is the poorest community in Maryland and was one of the hardest hit by the storm.  This spring 15 member of Gravel Hill went to Crisfield to help in the ongoing effort to make Crisfield whole again. please share their experience below"

Volunteers in Missions visited Puerto Rico on a Missions Trip.  Several members of Gravel Hill UMC joined VIM.  Below is a short video high-lighting the trip.

Gravel Hill's Partners in Missions/Missions started in September of 2004. The original goal for the group was to help local individuals and families in need.  Over the years, M/PIM has helped numerous people, families, and organizations.  Whether it be food, clothing, or medical supply donations, monetary donations for gift cards, help with rent & utilities, or gas card, or providing meals during Thanksgiving, our team works to better the lives of the people living in and around the Palmyra community.  In addition to these, M/PIM also volunteers at two local food banks.  Without volunteers from Gravel Hill to support this team with their time and generosity, we could never impact our community in such a powerful and positive way.

Here are some figures to think about.  In an average year:

  • our "Save the Tape" Redners Program raises over $1200.00
  • our Aluminum Can collection raises nearly $50
  • general congregation collections raise approximately $3000

All these monies go right into our Missions Fund which then is used to help support the numerous causes listed above.  Thank you from everyone on the Missions/Volunteers in Missions Team.
